Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett 2018 / 750 ml.

RP94+94–96 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 28th Jun 2019
The 2018 Brauneberger Juffer Riesling Kabinett is deep but bright and refined on the flinty nose that offers perfectly ripe Riesling and crunchy slate aromas with a warm iron touch. On the palate, this is a lush, refined, salty-piquant, even racy Riesling with generous fruit and a very long, salty-piquant and crystalline finish. This is a highly complex Riesling in the most delicate expression. It’s one of the wines you just have to buy — there won’t be any regrets, not today or in 30 years. Since this Brauneberger has slightly more sulfur compared to the Wehlener Sonnenuhr, which still hasn’t been filtered and was tasted from the lees, I will retaste the wines early next year, as I am convinced a Mosel Riesling needs two winters to unmask itself. Tasted in March 2019.

Region / Mosel

The German wine region, Mosel (or Mosel-Saar-Ruwer), produces some of the most beautiful white wines in the world, particularly Rieslings. The cool climate and Devonian slate soils in this region are said to lend to the unique character of Mosel Rieslings, with their floral nose and distinct minerality.

Country / Germany

View more wines from Germany

The German wine-making tradition is long and illustrious, dating back to as early as AD 800. And for a country just slightly smaller than Montana, Germany produces and consumes a great deal of wine (it's the seventh-largest producer and sixth-highest consumer).

Germany is situated at the most northerly latitude at which grapes can ripen; the winters are cold and the growing season short, all of which, incidentally, are nearly identical to the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Most of its wine regions are situated in central and southwestern Germany. The most significant are the Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Franken and Baden.

The Riesling grape is king in Germany, even though it represents only 20% of total plantings: Müller-Thurgau (a Riesling-silvaner cross) has the most, followed by the red grapes Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder. In good years and in the care of master winemakers, Riesling makes one of the greatest white wines in the world, with a perfect balance of sugar and acid, exquisite fruit and fragrance and with considerable potential for aging.

The source here is old vines in the section known as “Im Kleinschock,” a name that was recently registered for labeling purposes by the Webers of Hofgut Falkenstein, though Müller has not chosen to make use of the designation. (Like the Webers, Müller perpetuates the use of nicknames for each of his parcels, frequently referring to their former owners; this one, for instance, is “Schmitz.”) As with this year’s Altenberg Kabinett, there is a lightly fermentative note, here competing with scents of ripe apple and mango. A glossy, subtly creamy feel engenders almost an impression of fat — this was picked a week after the aforementioned Altenberg which, as Müller noted, derived from deeply golden as opposed to green-gold fruit — yet, at the same time, one is conscious of the wine’s alcoholic levity. Lightly tart tingling of apple skin and pineapple core lends welcome invigoration to a brightly juicy, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish whose sense of acid/sugar tension is entirely productive.

From 50-year old vines in two different parcels in the Kleinschock plot, the 2018 Niedermenniger Sonnenberg Saar Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben opens with an intense yet bright, clear and mineral bouquet of ripe seed fruit and crushed stone aromas. Lush and piquant with racy freshness and slatey purity, this is a remarkably fine and stimulating Kabinett with terroir expression and good aging potential. This is a pretty complete and expressive wine with white stone fruit aromas on the aftertaste that’s mouthwatering, salty, fresh and piquant like lime fruit. This is quite opulent and tastes rather like a Spätlese. Tasted in June 2019.

From the south-facing Grossschock plot, the 2018 Krettnacher Euchariusberg Saar Riesling Spätlese offers an intense and concentrated yet still discreet, coolish and flinty bouquet with lemon and lime aromas and a rather coolish, clayey slate note. It is fascinating in its depth and terroir character. Sweet, lush and round on the palate, this is a very elegant, mouth-filling, slightly (too) sweet yet piquant and lemon-fresh Spätlese withexcellent aging potential. It is salty, lush and piquant on the pure and refreshing finish. Tasted in June 2019.

Pungent, with rich earth, apricot, rhubarb and honey notes, a thick texture and vibrant structure. Excellent concentration here and a real sweet/tart interplay, followed by a long finish. Drink now through 2020. 25 cases made. (Bruce Sanderson)

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Dec 2021
Coming from 80- to 90-year-old vines, the 2020 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese is based on the last grapes harvested by Team MFR, with still moderate must weight. Fermented 100% in casks, this wine shows a clear but still reductive nose with ripe, intense and elegant fruit aromas as well as flint notes. On the palate, this is still an extremely young, vital and tensioned Riesling with ripe and juicy fruit but still many restrictions and serious grip. Promising but far too young to be fairly rated, two-thirds of the 2020 was fermented in casks and one-third in steel. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1921 in November 2021. Picked at 76° Oechsle, the 2021 Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Kabinett Feinherb is intense and lemon-fresh on the nose that shows pure and flinty fruit. Lush but clear and filigreed on the palate, with fine, crystalline and playful slate acidity, this is a remarkable, substantial and charmingly textured but frisky Sonnenlay Kabinett made in the medium-dry/sweet style. Bottled with 25 grams per liter of residual sugar and 9.5% alcohol, this is an excellent wine to have with food, particularly in 5–10 years. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

Picked at 78° Oechsle, the 2021 Erdener Treppchen Riesling Kabinett offers a pure, slate-driven and phenolic nose with ripe, yellow-fleshed fruit aromas intermingled with notes of crushed rocks, lemon zests and herbs. Round and sweet on the palate, this is a savory, crystalline and vivacious Kabinett with precise and sharp but well-integrated acidity (10.3 grams per liter). The wine was bottled with about 50 grams per liter of residual sugar and 8% stated alcohol. Drink young or aged for 10–15 years. Screw cap. Tasted in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2011
The Richter “two-star” 2010 Muhlheimer Helenenkloster Riesling Eiswein Fass #73 (that cask number being in effect merely a nick-name) represents the optically more concentrated, table-selected portion of December 3’s harvest (which constituted most of what little fruit there was in this site, though some had been picked out earlier and declassified to generic Riesling). Not surprisingly, acidity and residual sugar are elevated vis-a-vis the corresponding “regular” Helenenkloster Eiswein bottling; and the alcohol yet lower. High-toned intimations of herbal distillates mingle with fresh lemon and quince preserves on the nose. Intensely bright yet soothing, glycerin-rich as well as buoyant, on the palate this resembles a vanilla-, quince jelly-, and zest-laced lemon-lime sorbet. Sheer viscosity, as well as almost severe concentration and the integration of considerable bitterness preclude this offering quite the finishing refreshment of its reverberative, levity, and ostensibly lesser sibling. With tine perhaps it will prove the more complex and/or longer-lived of the pair. I would monitor any bottles along the way but anticipate its meriting 20 or more years of attention.
