Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Mulheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Kabinett feinherb 2021 / 750 ml.

Item#: 44373

RP90+90+ pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Aug 2022
Picked at 76° Oechsle, the 2021 Mülheimer Sonnenlay Riesling Kabinett Feinherb is intense and lemon-fresh on the nose that shows pure and flinty fruit. Lush but clear and filigreed on the palate, with fine, crystalline and playful slate acidity, this is a remarkable, substantial and charmingly textured but frisky Sonnenlay Kabinett made in the medium-dry/sweet style. Bottled with 25 grams per liter of residual sugar and 9.5% alcohol, this is an excellent wine to have with food, particularly in 5–10 years. Tasted at the domaine in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)

Where It's From

Region / Mosel

View more wines from Mosel

The German wine region, Mosel (or Mosel-Saar-Ruwer), produces some of the most beautiful white wines in the world, particularly Rieslings. The cool climate and Devonian slate soils in this region are said to lend to the unique character of Mosel Rieslings, with their floral nose and distinct minerality.

Country / Germany

View more wines from Germany

The German wine-making tradition is long and illustrious, dating back to as early as AD 800. And for a country just slightly smaller than Montana, Germany produces and consumes a great deal of wine (it's the seventh-largest producer and sixth-highest consumer).

Germany is situated at the most northerly latitude at which grapes can ripen; the winters are cold and the growing season short, all of which, incidentally, are nearly identical to the Finger Lakes Region of New York. Most of its wine regions are situated in central and southwestern Germany. The most significant are the Rheingau, Rheinhessen, Rheinpfalz, Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Nahe, Franken and Baden.

The Riesling grape is king in Germany, even though it represents only 20% of total plantings: Müller-Thurgau (a Riesling-silvaner cross) has the most, followed by the red grapes Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Dornfelder. In good years and in the care of master winemakers, Riesling makes one of the greatest white wines in the world, with a perfect balance of sugar and acid, exquisite fruit and fragrance and with considerable potential for aging.

Frankly off-dry, but with a bright lemony acidity and good freshness, this is an appealing introduction to Mosel riesling. After the fruit salad flavors on the front palate comes some dill and parsley character at the dry finish. Drink now. Screw cap. (Stuart Pigott)

Juicy and inviting, with ample ripe peach and lychee flavors. Boasts a brisk beam of mineral-laced acidity that cuts through the supple palate, while tangy grapefruit pith and flint mark the finish. Drink now. 30,000 cases made, 10,000 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

Balanced and snappy, with expressive apple blossom and white peach flavors that are vibrant and pure, thanks to racy acidity and salty slate minerality. Drink now through 2030. 10,000 cases made, 10,000 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

A super-expressive and very bright wine for a Mosel Spatlese with a ton of currant fruit right across the spectrum from black to white. Wonderfully complex palate that’s as juicy as it is herbal, with a touch of wild berry character that lifts the finish beautifully. Drink or hold. (James Suckling)
RP92+92–94 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 25th Aug 2022
The 2021 Ürziger Würzgarten Spätlese is coolish, clear and herbal on the nose, with ripe bright fruit and flinty terroir aromas. Good intensity. Lush and round yet also tangy and savory on the palate, this is a seductive and crystalline, saline and elegant Würzgarten that will come out as a long-distance runner. Tasted as a sample ready to be bottled in July 2022. (Stephan Reinhardt)
SP9191 pts. - Wine Spectator - Oct 15, 2023
Despite the rich, ripe profile, this shows serious savory character, with green tea, spicy white pepper and smoked celery seed infusing a base of green plum, kiwi and clementine. Long and silky. Drink now through 2031. 1,000 cases made, 500 cases imported. (Kristen Bieler)

RP9696 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
From vines almost 50 years old in the parcels Falkenberg and Lay and picked at 105° Oechsle in the same go, like the Grosses Gewächs, at the end of October, the 2022 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese offers a delicate and juicy-savory nose of ripe stone fruits, pink grapefruits, lemons and finely broken slate. Lush and delicate on the palate, with crystalline and saline acidity, this is a mouth-watering and juicy, wonderfully intense and aromatic Auslese from the JSU. It is gorgeous, but you should age it in you cellar for at least a decade. 7% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. (Stephan Reinhardt)

RP8989 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 31st May 2023
From old vines in the valley floor and also from the Erdener Herrenberg, the 2022 Richter Estate Riesling is a feinherb Gutswein that offers a bright, floral and beautifully slatey bouquet. Lush and round on the palate, this is a crystalline, saline and savory, fruity Mosel classic bottled with a bit more than 18 grams per liter of residual sugar, which comes across as ripe and juicy fruit. The acidity is wonderfully sharp and precise but nevertheless ripe. 10%% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in May 2023. (Stephan Reinhardt)

From vines about 50 years old, the 2022 Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese opens with a pure, crystalline and beautifully aromatic bouquet of ripe and lush, pretty tropical fruit aromas intertwined with lemon zests and broken slate. Round and saline on the palate, with ripe and playful, very elegant acidity, this is a mouth-filling, crystalline and saline Spätlese with very delicate phenolic grip and excellent aging potential. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted at the domaine in May 2023. (Stephan Reinhardt)

RP9191 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 22nd Dec 2011
The Richter “two-star” 2010 Muhlheimer Helenenkloster Riesling Eiswein Fass #73 (that cask number being in effect merely a nick-name) represents the optically more concentrated, table-selected portion of December 3’s harvest (which constituted most of what little fruit there was in this site, though some had been picked out earlier and declassified to generic Riesling). Not surprisingly, acidity and residual sugar are elevated vis-a-vis the corresponding “regular” Helenenkloster Eiswein bottling; and the alcohol yet lower. High-toned intimations of herbal distillates mingle with fresh lemon and quince preserves on the nose. Intensely bright yet soothing, glycerin-rich as well as buoyant, on the palate this resembles a vanilla-, quince jelly-, and zest-laced lemon-lime sorbet. Sheer viscosity, as well as almost severe concentration and the integration of considerable bitterness preclude this offering quite the finishing refreshment of its reverberative, levity, and ostensibly lesser sibling. With tine perhaps it will prove the more complex and/or longer-lived of the pair. I would monitor any bottles along the way but anticipate its meriting 20 or more years of attention.

RP9393 pts. - Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate - 9th Dec 2021
Coming from 80- to 90-year-old vines, the 2020 Elisenberger Riesling Spätlese is based on the last grapes harvested by Team MFR, with still moderate must weight. Fermented 100% in casks, this wine shows a clear but still reductive nose with ripe, intense and elegant fruit aromas as well as flint notes. On the palate, this is still an extremely young, vital and tensioned Riesling with ripe and juicy fruit but still many restrictions and serious grip. Promising but far too young to be fairly rated, two-thirds of the 2020 was fermented in casks and one-third in steel. 7.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted from AP 1921 in November 2021.
