Marlborough is undoubtedly New Zealand's most famous wine region, producing many of the crisp and fresh Sauvignon Blancs that put New Zealand on the wine map.

Located on the northeastern corner of South Island, this region is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the east and towering mountains to the north and south. This spectacularly beautiful setting has the ideal climate and soil composition for Sauvignon Blanc vineyards.

The picturesque South Island of New Zealand is home to five renowned wine regions, each with a number of quality producers. Marlborough is famous for producing some of New Zealand's crisp and zesty Sauvignon Blancs, while Central Otago is home to some terrific Pinot Noirs. You'll also find great wines in the other regions: Canterbury, Nelson, and Waipara Valley.

From the crisp acidity of a Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc to the bold complexity of Central Otago’s Pinot Noirs, New Zealand wine is as unmistakable as it is unapologetic. Still a relative newcomer to the wine industry after making a splash in the global market in the late 1970’s, New Zealand has wasted no time in carving out a name for themselves and their distinctive wines.

Sauvignon Blanc is New Zealand’s crown jewel, and thus, the most exported wine. The ferocious acidity and stark notes of grapefruit, gooseberry, and cut grass lead to an unforgettable wine drinking experience.

Other grapes of note in New Zealand include Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are also being grown for Bordeaux-style blends in the Hawke’s Bay region as well.

This is the Central Otago label from the Scott family (of Marlborough’s Allan Scott wines). Made from certified sustainable vineyards and fermented with native yeast, it takes its time opening but soon reveals appealing aromas of honeysuckle, passion fruit, bell pepper and green herbal characters. There’s a nice tingle of acidity on the chalky-textured palate and, while the finish is on the short side, there’s depth of flavor and plenty of refreshment here, too. (Christina Pickard)

Delivers Key lime, passion fruit and green apple flavors that are fresh, crisp and expressive on a sleek frame. Shows lemon zest, lanolin and a touch of sea salt, which lingers on the finish. Drink now. 10,000 cases made, 3,000 cases imported.

Fragrant, featuring honeysuckle, lemon blossom, peach and Key lime pie flavors that are concentrated, pure and expressive, with a touch of candied ginger on the finish. Drink now. 10,584 cases made, 10,584 cases imported.

Still very young and pungent, this shows those classic Marlborough SB feline notes along with passion fruit, guava and bell pepper, plus a salinity that evokes the wine’s coastal origins. Juicy passion fruit flavors flow on the palate although they’re quiet and tightly wound. Nevertheless, the finish is long and suggests the best of this wine is yet to come. Drink 2023–2026.

The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc Whitehaven has plentiful power and drive in its bright and light body. With its freshly cut grass and passionfruit-like fruit, it’s a taste of summer. All you need is Wimbledon. There’s more intensity than usual thanks to the season’s naturally small crop, concentrating the fruit and packing a punch.
