Critical Acclaim

JS95 JamesSuckling.com Thursday, April 2, 2020

"Lots of blackberry and blueberry character with stone and dried mint. It’s fermented with skins in concrete and aged there for eight months. This no-wood red is a joy. Drink now." (95 pts.)

RP95 Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate 31st Mar 2021

"The 2019 Concreto Malbec was produced with a selection of very stony soils, while the Polígonos is more of a village blend. They ferment with 100% full clusters but avoid the carbonic maceration, looking for the expression of very early-harvested grapes and looking for texture. This is very precise and balanced, pure, not overripe but textured. They like a faint note of blood and iron, and it’s austere and serious. They do a short maceration to avoid extraction and to show the (mineral) backbone of the wine. 45,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in February 2020." (95 pts.)

VN94 Vinous Oct 2020

"Concreto is a declaration of intent: “This wine encourages me to accelerate the process we’re already committed to,” said Sebastián Zuccardi. Unaged, this Malbec from Paraje Altamira was fermented in whole bunches and has become appreciably more precise in recent years. Intense purple in color. The nose offers raspberry, blackberry, fresh plum and black olive with hints of violet. The tightly packed, restrained, chalky palate offers firm tannic bones and energy. Bloody and elemental; the concentration is somehow maintained even though the wine feels light and flavorful on the tongue." (94 pts.)

Mendoza

Mendoza is Argentina's largest wine region, and produces a majority of the Argentine wines on the market. Much of the region lies in the foothills of the Andes mountains, and as result Mendoza vineyards are typically located at higher altitudes than most. Mendoza is the epicenter of the Malbec craze that has taken the wine world by storm in recent years, but also produces great examples of Cabernet Sauvignon and other grapes.

Argentina

Argentina took the wine world spotlight in the late 20th century with its plush, smooth Malbec. While the popular red grape still reigns supreme, Argentine wineries are increasingly putting forth excellent examples of multiple varietals, all at the extraordinary bargains that make this region so accessible.

Now the fifth largest wine-producing nation in the world, Argentina enjoys high-altitude and low-humidity vineyard sites, comparatively unencumbered by insects and disease. Argentina’s unique terroir has captured the interest of such internationally celebrated winemakers as Paul Hobbs and Michel Rolland, both of whom have projects in the country.
